James Sylvester is Maine based visual artist working in the mediums of linocut and woodblock to create prints steeped in a dedicated drawing practice. He graduated from Maine College of Art with a BFA in Printmaking in 2018, after which he spent the next 5 years teaching as an artist mentor at The Art Department, an arts based community support program. In 2023 he parted ways with The Art Department to begin working full time as a visual artist and took on the position of Co-President at Peregrine Press, Maine’s oldest non profit printmaking cooperative. Today, he splits his time between working on new prints at Peregrine, teaching workshops, hiking around Maine’s trails for his next favorite spot to draw, and organizing a weekly market called “Art in the Garden” at Bissell Brothers to support fellow artists to sell their work to the Southern Maine community. He has shown work at Cove Streets Arts, The ICA at MECA&D, Ocean House Gallery, CURRENTS New Media Festival, The Harlow, 82 Parris and more.
